Effects of COVID-19 on high altitude mountaineers
Apr 1, 2020
High altitude mountaineers typically pursue their sport in remote locations away from civilisation, but they couldn't escape the fallout of COVID-19 that caused travel restrictions and spurred quarantines around the world. We had a chat with one of our members Tumi Mphahlele about what this means for her. Tumi was part of the first South African women's team due to attempt Mt Everest in April. The expedition was suspended due COVID-19 pandemic.

Happy 2018!
Jan 2, 2018
Dear Freedom Climbers! We had a wonderful 2017 and now its time to make plans for the new year. We are more than grateful for your involvement and the time you shared with AFC in 2017. We did our best to offer the warmest welcome whilst climbing Kilimanjaro — the highest summit in Africa. And as always, wherever you travel your safety and comfort is our priority. We are so looking forward to offering more events in the coming year. We're going to add new routes to our map and there will be up-to-date hotels and climbing camps on the list as well. We'll be thrilled to see talented young people and devoted mountaineers joining our team! Let the New 2018 be the time of your dreams, luck and happiness. We wish you and your family the very best and every success! Sincerely, AFC team!
Open Letter to Minister Fikile Mbalula
Mar 14, 2017
During April 2016, Minister Fikile Mbalula made the following announcement: “As part of women empowerment and creating hope for young women all over the country and our quest to expand on the basket of Recreation programmes we offer, we will facilitate an expedition to Mount Everest, where the intention is to have the first black South African to summit #SRSAbudget2016” via Twitter. We have now been advised that women who are ready to attempt Mount Everest this year have to do so if they are paying for themselves as the Department is committed to funding the expedition in 2018. If the record is broken this year, funding for 2018 will be withheld. The purpose of this letter is to make a public plea to the Minister to reconsider this decision.
